New Bloomsbury Set Bar and Lounge

Hidden away in the heart of literary Bloomsbury (its ok, this is a bar review and we won’t talk too much about books), is New Bloomsbury Set, one of our favourite gay and friends watering holes. Home to a lengthy range of delicious cocktails, you arrive at a discreet but cheery entrance - fairy lights and topiary. Step down into the basement where you are presented with a cosy warm bar furnished with intimate tables and armchairs, and in the corner a romantic alcove or two (can alcoves be romantic… we think so, you know what we mean!). On the walls, posters acknowledging the literary heritage of the area. In the air, fun cheesy disco music. On the screens, back-to-back episodes of TVs ‘Wonder Woman’, Linda Carter, the original (I had to explain to my younger drinking companion who this was).

Shaking my head in sorrow at the passing years, we plunged rapidly into the list of cocktails. Expertly concocted by the eye pleasing barmen, we cantered through reasonably priced (£7.90 - £8.90) Porn Star Martinis, Cosmopolitans, their signature Bloomsbury Sidecar and Classic Champagne. We arrived on this Saturday evening quite early when the bar was quiet and were pleasantly surprised, after a while of cocktailing, to look around us to find the place, busy, lively and exuberant. Two separate birthday groups – one celebrating 30 and one 40, happily co-mingled. New Bloomsbury Set is that kind of place.

This is a seven day a week hangout. Happy Hour from 4.00pm until 8.00pm every day on select cocktails, beer and wine. Watch out for their Karaoke nights, drag shows and the renowned, regular, Douze Points Eurovision Party. So, New Bloomsbury Set, a place for after work cocktails, dates (alcoves), birthday parties, and a great night out. An OutSavvy must on our cocktail and bar circuit.
