The Natural Philosopher

One of the best things about London is how eclectic and creative it can be, especially when it comes to bars. One place that embraces both of these things is the stylish and ultra-sexy The Natural Philosopher.

At the end of Hackney Road, just a stone’s throw from Cambridge Heath station is a very special place. By day it’s a vintage Mac repair store and by night it’s a cocktail bar that’s all about the good times.

The style of the bar is incredibly warm with exposed brick work, dim lighting and a speakeasy feel to it. Whilst there are seats to sit in the shop window like the lovely ladies in Amsterdam, we much prefer to sit out back in the cosy lounge area. Mainly because there’s a huge mirror which allows you to scan the room to see what hotties walk in…or just to check yourself out. Whichever you prefer.

The cocktails range from your classics to the ‘Cocktails of the House’. The emphasis is simple. High quality spirits using fresh and simple ingredients. Take for example Divine Artisan. Homemade Grapefruit bitters, vanilla infused sugar, Pamplemouse Rose, a hint of lychee and Brokers Gin base shaken on ice. This is a stunning cocktail that’s thick and luscious, with a sweet finish. Or the Zabarella. Homemade cardamom infused Casco Viejo Silver Tequila mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice, homemade vanilla infused sugar syrup and pomegranate juice top. A perfect mix of sweet and savoury.

But one of the highlights of The Natural Philospher are their Wednesday night Bourbon & Blues with some of London’s finest musicians and their Sunday Bloody Mary & Board Games. Exactly what you need after a long weekend. Delicious Bloody Marys and a spot of competition.

With their unique set up (check out the bar area. Aptly named the “up the skirt bar”), great location and their approach to cocktails, as cocktail bars go in London, The Natural Philosopher is up their as one of the best.
