Celebrate and support Diversity Role Models, November 10th 2017

We sat down with Will Fletcher, Head of Operations, to tell us about  Diversity Role Models, who they are, the work they do and about the fundraiser Diversity Role Models Spectacular event on 10th November 2017.

Thanks for chatting with us today Will. So, first of all, tell us about Diversity Role Models, the organisation. Who are you and what do you do?

At Diversity Role Models we work to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and create a world where all young people can live, learn and thrive, regardless of their differences. We do this in three ways: training teachers so they can embed LGBT+ inclusion within their schools, supporting students by creating a safe space for them to explore difference and meet people that challenge their stereotypes. And thirdly, by helping them think about the impact of the often "throwaway" derogatory language they use regarding LGBT+ people. Our results are impressive; more than half of the people who say they wouldn’t support an LGBT+ person in their school at the start of the session, have changed their minds at the end.

That's really impressive. Now, tell us about  Diversity Roles Models Spectacular Event. This is going to be fun but also an important evening – both for raising your profile and raising funds for your worthwhile work?

Absolutely. The Spectacular is DRM’s main event of the year, so it’s an opportunity to come together and celebrate all that we’ve achieved. And we’ve purposely set the date at the start of Anti-Bullying Week, as we want to keep in people’s minds that the funds raised will go to preventing bullying and creating schools where every young person can be themselves. Whether our guests are familiar with our work already, or new to us, we want everyone to leave with a sense of excitement about the vital work we’re doing in schools.

And what can guests expect on the night –
in what ways will it be Spectacular?

The Spectacular is going to be a really special evening. Great entertainment, 400 people - new friends and old, mingling, having fun together and combining their passion to make a real difference to the lives of the next generation. The event we have created offers something for everyone: glitz and glamour but the opportunity to wear whatever makes you feel great, a stunning array of auction prizes from artwork to experiences, and a number of fun ways to be part of the action.

We’re really excited to have the amazing Beverley Savarin performing her Just Whitney Tribute, as well as performances from the London Gay Men’s Chorus and the magician Katharine Rhodes.

What will you be doing with the funds you raise?

We’re aiming to raise £50,000 on the night. As a small charity, that’s enough to make a really significant difference to our work. Everything that we raise will go back into our work with schools, supporting young people to become a truly inclusive generation. It will also enable us to equip more school staff with the tools they need to support all young people, whether they know they’re LGBT+, are questioning their sexuality or gender identity, or want to be an active ally to our community.

And finally, what other events through the year do you have planned and how can we get involved to support you?

We do have some other exciting events in the planning over the next year, but nothing we’re ready to announce yet – so watch this space! Of course, there always other ways people can get involved to support us. Whether that’s becoming a regular donor, undertaking a fundraising challenge, volunteering to support our work or something else entirely. There’s a whole host of information on our website – www.diversityrolemodels.org – and we’re always happy to talk to people in more detail about how they could personally support us.
