Solitude can be a beautiful thing. Pulling away from the preoccupations of life can often provide space for a reassessment of what is actually important and a break from the materialism that life so often begs of us.
This year, we have experienced the difference between solitude and isolation. Seemingly alone, we have been riding on the crest of waves of so many social, political, cultural and environmental calamities that it is almost as if, from the trembling vantage points of such treacherous waves, we can see the islands of our destiny in the distance. The current uncertainty of life has encouraged us to fixate our gaze onto the horizon, our eyes steady on land, putting the idea of mirages and optical illusions out of mind. Night falls, all is dark though the moon shines bright, piercing the echo of the night with her light. The air is cold yet there is no stillness in the thrashing tides. Day breaks. The sun rises, heaving forward the burden of the evening, the burning of the moon. The islands appear again, our eyes fixate once more on the possibilities of the future.
