Join us to hear Vaneet Mehta – bisexual advocate, author and Pride organiser – on his national tour to talk about his new book ‘Bisexual Men Exist: A Handbook for Bisexual, Pansexual and M-Spec Men’. We will hear a reading, discuss ideas and questions about the book’s work, and Vaneet will of course sign your copy!
“Being a bisexual man isn't easy - something Vaneet Mehta knows all too well. After spending more than a decade figuring out his identity, Vaneet's coming out was met with questioning, ridicule and erasure. This experience inspired Vaneet to create the viral #BisexualMenExist campaign, combatting the hate and scepticism m-spec (multi-gender attracted spectrum) men encounter, and helping others who felt similarly alone and trapped.
This powerful book is an extension of that fight. Navigating a range of topics, including coming out, dating, relationships and health, Vaneet shares his own lived experience as well as personal stories from others in the community to help validate and uplift other bisexual men. Discussing the treatment of m-spec men in LGBTQ+ places, breaking down stereotypes and highlighting the importance of representation and education, this empowering book is a rallying call for m-spec men everywhere.”
Bisexual Men Exist is published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, £15 in paperback, and copies are optionally available with tickets and on the day. All sales support both the author and the event organiser, whose time is unpaid for this event. Back to Books is funding the author’s travel, and food and drinks for the day.
Sunday 5 March 2023
2.30-4pm
Cherry Reds café
Upstairs in the large Bosta room
88-92 John Bright St
Birmingham B1 1BN
Access
The event room is on the first floor and the café does not have a lift, so this book launch is not accessible for people who use wheelchairs or are unable to navigate stairs. There are 21 stairs from the ground floor to the first floor, which are fairly steep, narrow and arranged in a spiral. As event organisers Alexia and Vaneet understand this is excludes many of our queer community members from attending in person, and we are really sorry we could not find an accessible venue with our resources.
Dogs are only allowed in the café if they are assistance dogs.
The event room is large with tables and chairs, and a wall of padded leather banquette seating at the back. Please let us know if any cushions or blankets will support your comfort.
Any questions, please contact Alexia at backtobooksuk at gmail.com
Getting there
Cherry Reds is very close to Birmingham New Street station, approx. 2 minute walk, and about 12 minute walk from Birmingham Moor Street station. Taxis can pull up on John Bright Street almost outside the café, which is on a corner opposite Turtle Bay and BrewDog venues.
