Come through to the Common Counter for an evening of Music making, feeling and celebrating!
We've broken the evening down into 3 sections:
PRODUCERS- Ableton Live Jam- 7pm-9pm
This section is for all the queer producers out there using Ableton live, who are looking for a communal space to learn out loud.
We will be using African rhythms as our inspiration for the session and will use the 2 hours to create and support each other within that; no pressure on any outcomes, just a willingness to learn and share with each other. The space will prioritise women, femmes & Enbys.
*A basic understanding of Ableton Live is necessary as everyone will be learning from each other and we want everybody to have the time to focus on their personal projects.
*You are very welcome to come through if you use any other software
DJS & DANCERS- Open Decks + Dance Cypher- 9pm-11pm
Freestylers, movers, shakers, the stage is yours. The only rule for the open decks is your set must be afro inspired/infused in some way.
You don't need to be a professional in anyway, just a lover of movement!
The venue decks are Pioneer XDJ RX2s so bring your USBs or your laptops!
PRE-MOTIVE VIBES!- 11PM-12AM
DJ DAE will be taking over the decks for the last hour to prep you for the rest of your Friday. Expect, Old school/ New School Afrobeats, Afropop, House/Afrohouse & whatever else the vibe calls for!
The orgs we will be donating to tonight will be:
NADHARIA KENYA
Nadharia Kenya is a vibrant organization of Trans and Non binary persons in Kenya. Nadharia was founded in 2019 in response to an increase in cases of violence against non-binary and trans people exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic.
In the past two years, we recorded a spike in the reports of homelessness, economic indignity, disinheritance and hostile family environment leading to an increase in drug abuse, high school, college drop-out rate and mental health deterioration within LGBTIQ+ youth.
While there have been many efforts to address these challenges we have noted a representation gap within the society of young trans and non binary persons. Nadharia therefore seeks to bridge the gap by creating safe spaces, particularly a transitional safe house engaging in income generating activities, and capacity strengthening, for the safe house beneficiaries.
