Join Quench at Royal Vauxhall Tavern to discover how the law affects personal, public and professional kink practices in the UK - now and in our recent queer history.
With a panel of activists and event organisers, we explore questions like: Why is consensual BDSM still illegal in the UK? How does this impact the kink scene and sex workers? How does the law really affect us queer kinksters?
We're inviting you to learn with us and to discuss this topic as a community. We'll challenge your preconceptions with a quiz, before deferring to our panel of activists and experts in kink and the law. We’ll learn more about LGBTQ+ kink history, the biggest legal challenges facing the kink scene, and get our teeth into topics like venue closures and licensing. You’ll be able to ask your questions during the Q&A!
Quench are proud as members of the kink community to be able to host this night of discovery and discussion. We believe it's important to talk about these issues as a community, and to work in solidarity - and to have a fabulous time doing it!
What you can expect:
- An eye-opening kink and the law quiz
- A lively discussion about how legal restrictions interact with private, public and professional kink practices
- Insight into the history of UK kink (in a venue that's held drag shows for over 50 years!)
- Q&A with a panel of activists!
Things to note:
- In the discussion about kink and the law there will be mention of discrimination (tw: homophobia, racism) and negative interactions with the police.
- The quiz is informal - no need to revise!
As Kellen Farshea (ACT UP, Backlash) puts it, "Kink is the orphan child of the sexual revolution… because no one wanted us. But we can change that, can't we?"
