Do you want to dance at your favorite DISCO club or HOUSE party and hold your own on the floor? You don't have to be a professional dancer. You just need to take this class.
The Common Press is proud to host the third and final limited dance workshop series of 2023 with Kumari Suraj.
A true club kid married to the culture! Since the age of 14, Kumari has experienced the joy of club culture in the wildest house and disco clubs from New York to Cape Town to Tokyo to Paris and even Portland, Oregon of all places. Kumari will share some of their party dance experiences in this limited workshop series that explores the LGBTQ+ movement foundation, queer musical history of Waacking & House dance.
6:30-8pm : Warm up with Waacking and House dance foundation plus the occasional light choreo to gain understanding of how to actually dance these styles on your own terms. Exercises are designed to develop your confidence on the dance floor and in social settings with friends at the club or holiday house party. This class will feel like a party.
Waacking & House are originally social dance styles. Post pandemic, it's the social aspect people are missing more and more in current club culture. If the legacy of these dance styles is to live, the way people experience them needs to shift. So the dance studio lighting will be set to feel like a club! VIBES WILL BE SET TO FEEL LIKE A CLUB. Let's build the social dance aspect of these cultures again.
A mix of Pay What You Can tickets and discounted tickets for multiple sessions are available.
Class Schedule
OCT 3 - NOV 28
