As part of our programme of events to mark World AIDS Day, join Mexican HIV activist and artist, Roberto Tovar, founder of Número de Serie, for a session in which he will explore his work, which delivers an important sexual heath message within Latin communities.
He will talk about a new work developed specifically for World AIDS Day, "Greatest Hits", which comprises three installations that draw inspiration from the popular salsa song "El Gran Varón" (The Great Man) by Willie Colón. This song, written by Panamanian composer Omar Alfanno in 1986, holds particular significance as it was composed in the same year Tovar was born.
"El Gran Varón" was the first Spanish-speaking song to address HIV/AIDS and queerness back in 1989, although it was trying to create awareness it also induced fear and anxiety about growing up queer in Tovar’s experience.
Roberto will also be discussing the role of music and other forms of entertainment in addressing HIV and AIDS throughout the last 40 years, this is an interactive discussion and we encourage your participation and the sharing of experiences.
