Director John Maybury - who first rose to prominence helming music videos for Sinead O'Connor and Pet Shop Boys, as well as collaborating with Derek Jarman - crafts not only a rigorous snapshot of a period in iconic contemporary artist Francis Bacon's life, but a vividly immersive journey into the dark heart of the work itself.
Love Is the Devil seems to live within Bacon's brutal paintings, depicting a cutthroat world of cruel figures and emotional depravity as it depicts the fraught relationship between Bacon (Derek Jacobi) and his troubled lover George Dyer (Daniel Craig), conjuring the gay pub culture of 1960s London, and letting viewers float down a river of gruel and into Bacon's consciousness.
