The Masterworkers believe that no one should have to be overdressed, uncomfortably seated, or even sober to enjoy classical music performed by some of London’s top professional musicians.
Unbuttoned from the formality of the conventional classical concert, the Masterworkers return to the Two Brewers in Clapham to present Tchaikovsky's dazzling and romantic 'Souvenir de Florence' alongside an eclectic selection of popular classical and crossover music including pieces by Brahms, Erroll Garner, Vivaldi, Angela Morley, and Gershwin. The ensemble brings together musicians from London’s finest orchestras, including the English National Opera, the BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Masterworkers are committed to giving performances of the quality you would hear at the Wigmore Hall or Southbank Centre, but in a relaxed social setting. It’s a 'labour of love' for the performers, who have enjoyed long careers as professional musicians and want to share the joy that this wonderful music has brought them. By keeping ticket prices lower, they hope to make the event more accessible and encourage anyone new to classical music to 'take a punt'.
Masterworkers’ leader, Gavin Davies, has accompanied a wide range of major artists including Barbra Streisand, Dame Edna Everage, The Bear’s Den, and Pink Martini, as well as recording soundtracks for over 100 films and TV shows. Gavin is known for his dry delivery of comedic tangents between pieces that provide historical and emotional context to the music.
Performing at an LGBT+ venue like the Two Brewers, where everyone is welcome regardless of how they identify, gives us an opportunity to provide a truly socially integrated night out. There’s no dress code, but uniforms, leathers, rubbers, jeans, ballgowns and cardigans are all encouraged. Whether you’re more S&M or M&S, come as yourself.
The small, friendly setting of the Two Brewers allows groups of friends or solo attendees to meet, interact and enjoy. Drinks are served throughout this relaxed performance; the programme finishes around 9:15pm, and everyone is welcome to stay for after-show drinks.
