in and outside of a moment in time: self-presence and the uncanny in machinima
Talk + Screening - Farr’s basement - Oct 10th - doors 6:30 - 7:00 start
“Only by going further and further into gamespace might one come out the other side of it. (…) The method for doing so may now be apparent: pressing against the limits of the game from within, to find the other terms now forgotten behind the agon. (…) a conflict within and against the game, and a journey through it to get beyond it.” (pp. 227, 2007) McKensie, Wark
Machinima (the act of making films within video games) remediates both films and games, creating a hybrid film/game object. This hybrid object of machinima interrupts our understanding of its major forms. Machinima is inherently uncanny, its representation of the real is so similar to reality but completely immaterial, our virtual doppelgangers taking human forms but made of polygons and code. At what point does this line begin to blur and the virtual becomes reality?
Join me in the Farr's basement as we explore this filmmaking practice, and our uncanny attraction to It. This is followed by a screening of machinima films that frame the subject for further inquiry.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FARRS IS NOT A WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE VENUE.
