💫 About the event
For many of us, the contemplation about death is more than death itself. In past conversations at 53 Death Cafe, there have been two common threads - how we’d like to be treated at the end of life and how we’d like to be remembered after death (our legacy).
The November edition of 53 Death Cafe will focus on the latter. Specifically, we invite our participants to join us in a reflective imagination of our own ‘graves’*. Guided by our dear friend and London-based artist Ann (@Yian_artcraft), we will visualise the material presentation of the grave through drawing, painting, and (maybe) sculpting, and reflect on what it says about our relationship with life, death and the world around us.
Here are some questions we might be reflecting on:
- Where is my grave? (in the ground, in the sea, or up on a cliff?)
- What would I like to have around my grave? (trees, a hot spring, ocean waves, or perhaps the grave of my best friend who would be excellent company even after our death?)
- What goodies will I bring with me to the grave? (my books, my vibrator, the fragrance of lavender from grandma’s garden, or the happiness of seeing my dog after a long trip?)
- What would I look like lying in my grave?
- What is the story that my grave `will be telling the world?
*I use ‘grave’ here as a general term since there is no one fixed set of practices for funeral and burial. For example, the grave can be a physical structure with a tombstone, or a symbolic resting place—a memory tree, a scattering of ashes at sea, or even an ephemeral space created in nature.
