About Tess Martin and her Film
Still Life with Woman, Tea and Letter uses animation to explore two moments in time. A woman reads a letter at a table; next to her, a photograph becomes a window into the past. Real objects and actors are animated frame by frame to create a layered portrait of memory, time, and identity. As the day passes and timelines blur, the film invites the viewer into a quiet, poignant reflection on how we move through time—and how time moves through us. The film, a modern interpretation of a classical still life, lasts only 2 minutes and 14 seconds but was shot in one nine-hour marathon session, with a photo taken every 30 seconds."
Director’s bio:
Tess Martin is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Rotterdam. Her work is rooted in hand-crafted animation techniques, through which she explores themes such as vulnerability in relation to nature, the passage of time, and the fragile nature of memory. A childhood spent growing up between multiple cultures leads her to focus on themes of identity, connection, and the feeling of belonging. Tess’s work has been shown at international festivals and galleries around the world.
