You'll find your call… cruising the Sodomite's Walk, oi!
The Old City - a centre for finance, business, phallus amulets, and of course, queerness.
Join Dani Dinger of the Queer Tours of London collective on this romp through the oldest part of the capital. Giggle about the shopping trolley escapade which landed a drag queen in the Old Bailey, ponder how the architecture of the old St Paul's cathedral made it a safe haven for gays of yore, learn how a well-meaning Guildhall clerk played a role in the arrest of Oscar Wilde, and of course… cruise the Sodomite's Walk.
This tour packs a 500 year old punch, and is sure to open your eyes to a sometimes-sexy, sometimes-sombre, always queer-as-queer-can-be side to this concrete jungle.
Accessibility information:
- This is a walking tour which covers about 1.5 miles on foot through the Old City of London.
- The tour begins at the Old Bailey courthouse, and ends in Spitalfields Market.
- The tour lasts between 90 - 120 mins, depending on our pace, and how chatty we are.
- The route is step free, and some stops have access to seating (which may be some stairs, rather than a chair)
- We will always match the pace of the slowest traveller. We are happy to stop for bathroom breaks and hot/cold drinks.
- The tour contains themes of homophobic oppression, state violence against queer people, colonialism, death, and marginalization.
This tour was researched and written by me and Andrew Lumsden - a dear friend and founding member of the Gay Liberation Front, also a total filthbag. We used to lead these tours together, but sadly he died aged 81 in November 2023. I will be doing my best impression of him as we go around. Missing you always, Andrew!
