THE POWER UP PARTY! WITH CHIYO GOMES, SHAKONA FIRE, VERONICA MONTENEGRO AND BAE SHARAM!The Power Up Party will be celebrating marginalised intersectionalities and helping us power up to take on structural oppression!
The Riot Alliance is hosting a party to help us bridge the gaps within our community at a day of workshops, talks, panels, performances and a fucking good dance party to celebrate our narratives.
We welcome everyone who wants to work towards dismantling our colonial, supremacist and patriarchal ignorance fuelled notions - and ultimately support the people of colour and marginalised folks in our community. Everyone regardless of their privilege is welcome and encouraged to join us, to support people with marginalised intersectionalities, to participate in conversations, to learn, to be inspired, to incite riots and to dance the night away with us!
WHO ARE THE RIOT ALLIANCE?
The Riot Alliance is a community-based organisation that aims to create queer spaces that are inclusive, prioritise marginalised intersectionalities and heal our community:
(1) We are committed to creating responsible, respectful and accountable spaces
(2) We host events that are as accessible as possible
(3) We are committed to creating queer spaces that aim to prioritise marginalised communities. Our queerness is politically radical!
(4) We are committed to the more than just rainbows policy
Our core team of rioters is composed primarily of people of colour, trans and nonbinary folks, femmes, people with disabilities, sex workers, women and we have a single token cis white guy making a cup of tea in the background.
WHY THE POWER UP PARTY?
For too many years, we are hearing that the queer community is being divided by call-out culture, by "political correctness gone mad", by privileged and white folks who are struggling with challenges to those privileges.
As a result are seeing more and more of a divide as people of colour and marginalised folks are demonised and vilified for talking about their daily trauma, for being angry about structural oppression, for asking for their experiences to be listened to.
We saw the impact this has had on people of colour, and people with marginalised intersectionalities. We are seeing ourselves withdraw away from our friends, feel afraid of our peers, feel isolated and alone. We decided that it's important as the Riot Alliance to help create a space fo healing.
The Power Up Party aims to centre our voices as marginalised folks and invite our friends, peers and lovers to come to our spaces, listen to our stories, learn from us, and be inspired to educate others. And more importantly, to incite a fucking riot against the status quo!
The Power Up Party is about us all powering up together!
