‘Duende’, Flamenco & LGBTQIA+ Community Workshop
22nd October | 18:30–20:30
Join Irene Giménez, founder of the community flamenco organisation Fin de Fiesta, to explore the powerful connection between flamenco and community, and experience first-hand the concept of duende.
The workshop begins with an introduction to the social and collective roots of flamenco, what a juerga (flamenco community party) is, why it matters, and how it shapes the art form through conversation and short videos. You’ll then be guided to feel the compás (rhythm) in your body through palmas (clapping), body percussion, jaleos (vocal encouragement), and simple dance elements commonly used in juergas.
In the second half, we’ll explore the concept of duende (the emotional and expressive peak a flamenco artist reaches, where deep joy or pain is powerfully felt and expressed uniquely shaped by each individual's experience). Through physical exercises and poetry, you’ll reflect on your personal connection to duende and create a personal paso: a unique, expressive gesture or movement that feels authentically yours.
The session concludes with a joyful, improvised juerga, where everyone joins in using what they’ve learned, blending flamenco tools with their own movement and background to become the star of the party.
Come and feel the freedom flamenco offers—and discover your own unique way of moving.
