Censorship in British Literature & Media: A Talk by Connor Sansby
Initially created as part of Marine Studios long running First Friday events, the Banned Books Reading Room features notable examples of queer literature that have at times faced censorship as British law and sensibility has evolved, as well as core examples of the British literary canon, such as as Ulysses and Lady Chatterley's Lover that have faced restriction by the censors. In this talk Connor shares his collection of books, film and music examining our precarious right to free speech and examining the shifting tides of political taste.
Margate Queer Library teams up with local artists Connor Sansby & Dan Thompson to host a special residency of books that have been censored in the United Kingdom as part of Index on censorship revived Banned Books Week 2025 running 5th October to 11th October.
The week-long residency forms part of Index on Censorship’s Banned Books Week 2025. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.
Banned Books Week UK is led by Index on Censorship as a parallel campaign to Banned Books Week in the USA. It ran successfully for a couple of years prior to the pandemic and is re-launching in 2025.
