We’re so excited to invite you to our first in-person Black Feminist Book Club in Sheffield. We’ll be reading “The Women Could Fly” by Megan Giddings to guide us as we explore what collective care and solidarity look like in practice between Black women and gender-expansive people.

We chose this book to energise and inspire hopeful conversations about what we can do together, how we support each other, and what we can learn from one another. This space is for us to connect with each other, share our experiences and wisdom, and build our collective capacity as we delve deep into the works of Black feminist and queer writers.

About the book: Reminiscent of the works of Octavia E. Butler, The Women Could Fly is a queer feminist speculative novel that speaks to our times – a piercing dystopian tale, set in a world in which magic is real and single women are closely monitored in case they are shown to be witches.

Content warning: While this book is full of hope and imagination, it also explores some heavy and uncomfortable themes. Please take care of yourself as you read. Do this in a way that feels right for you.

Buy the book directly from the Black Feminist Bookshop.

About the organiser

The Black Feminist Bookshop is a queer Black woman-owned project inspired by resistance, imagination and care. The project works to create transformative change in the lives of Black women, girls and gender-expansive people through engagement with Black feminist literature.

The Bookshop’s mission is to equip people and communities with the knowledge and tools to dismantle systems of oppression in their everyday lives, including white supremacy and colonialism. We do this by providing access to vital Black feminist literature and facilitating discussions that illuminate the historical and contemporary realities of oppression and tactics for navigating and dismantling oppressive structures, while also building agency and collective power and strengthening connections.
