We are incredibly excited to be welcoming Zoe John-Kay to host this much requested workshop on Anti-fat Bias in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
The session’s learning objectives will be to:
- Understand the history and current context of anti-fat bias, including its intersection with racism, sexism, and class
- Individually reflect on one’s own relationship to fatphobia and anti-fat bias
- Consider the impact of conscious and unconscious anti-fat bias in the therapeutic process
- Understand some of the ways in which anti-fat bias particularly impacts people from GSRD communities
Zoe's workshop will cover a brief history of anti-fat bias, comparing fatphobia and anti-fat bias, and understanding the structural nature of anti-fat bias and it's impact on people of all sizes. From a therapeutic perspective this session will also cover how anti-fat bias shows up in the therapy room and understanding sexuality, gender, relationships, and kink in the context of body size. Lastly, Zoe will offer suggestions of frameworks to counter anti-fat bias including body positivity, bodyneutrality, fat liberation, and Health At Every Size®.
This workshop will be held on Zoom and will involve presentation, small and whole group discussion, and individual reflection. We invite you to engage in whatever way is most comfortable and accessible for you.
