When humans are on the move, food is the first thing to be carried along. As regions, ingredients, cooks, eaters, and even eras change, food transforms in the course of its own journey — yet endures across time. The primary scene of food is the individual and the family, reflecting, day by day, the history of a lineage and the choices of a life. Among migrants — and especially among Chinese migrant communities — food often becomes a means of livelihood, crossing cultural divides and embedding itself into the social fabric of a foreign land. People carry food, and in doing so carry their own sense of selfhood; while food, passed down through word of mouth and hand to hand, continuously evolves and takes on a life of its own. This conversation will take two specific food research and design projects as its starting point, exploring the concrete ways in which food shifts across space and time, and how individuals reshape their lives through the decisions they make around food. Through the dual lenses of "family versus society" and "China versus the Netherlands," we will chew over the personal experiences of mobility and the social strategies of survival that food carries within it. Bonus: At the close of the conversation, we will invite everyone to take part in a hands-on interactive activity — featuring a Chinese food deeply connected to the experience of a life in motion — as a way of embodying the richness of everything we have explored together.

In 2021, it launched a social participation project called "In Search of 1000 Family Recipe Keepers": through family recipes, the project delves into local food cultures while uncovering new definitions of "home" and the rich emotions of individuals on the move. Our hope is: For those who have left home, build a dining table as a home.
