For our June meet-up we’re joined by Hanna Andersen, a researcher from Cardiff University (and part of the Cardiff QPCP Group). Hanna will be a running a games and craft session with us as a way to talk about and explore queer experiences of family and important relationships.
We’ll play the card game ‘Happy Families’ together and discuss what it tells us about ‘families’. We will then create our own sets of cards using arts and crafts materials to depict our significant relationships. These can be as abstract as you like, no artistic ability required - promise!
Who is the session for?
Anyone who is 18+, identifies as LGBTQ+, lives in England/Scotland/Wales, and has considered parenting beyond a romantic couple within the past 15 years (this could be as a platonic coparent, or as a single parent or multiparent family including one or more romantic relationships).
How will this be used in research?
Hanna is researching how social policies effect LGBTQ+ families in Britain, in particular those parenting beyond the romantic couple. She is interested in the ways that queer people define and understand family, and how this may differ to policy definitions.
The group discussion will be recorded. During the craft session, Hanna will ask you some questions about who the important people are in your life, and your own definitions of those relationships. These conversations will also be recorded. A photograph will be taken of the cards that you create.
When you sign up, a full information sheet will be sent to you which also outlines in more detail how your data will be used. You will be able to withdraw at anytime before, during, and up to two weeks after the session. You can also find out more about the project here.
