Hey Theatre Fam,
For our next Theatre Club outing, we’re heading to the Place to see “Joy Isn’t Always Joy” on 27 May at 7.30pm.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
In “Joy Isn’t Always Joy”, choreographer Joseph Toonga presents a deeply personal hip-hop theatre work that explores the inner struggles and lived experiences of Black men. The piece confronts the isolating reality of having to use "joy" as a heavy mask to cover up trauma in a society that often misinterprets their true feelings.
Rather than focusing on individual hardship, the work centers brotherhood as an active form of care. Influenced by aquilombamento—a Brazilian concept of collective resistance and mutual support—the dancers use the intense movement vocabulary of hip-hop to practice genuine vulnerability.
By creating a space where men can safely express rage, sadness, and tenderness, the performance offers a sincere reflection on community, collective healing, and the quiet strength found in looking out for one another.

Our Theatre Club has a special limited allocation of tickets for just £10 (instead of £30), plus a £1.10 transaction fee.
You can also add a small donation at checkout if you’d like to support the project and the work behind it. That would be really appreciated 💖
‼️Limited tickets are available with this special offer. First come, first served — so book ASAP to avoid disappointment ‼️
You’ll book here, and then I’ll send you the details of the meet-up point. You’ll collect your ticket on the day.
And as always, Theatre Club is not about being an expert, knowing the “right” thing to say, or arriving with a polished opinion. It’s about meeting people, making new friends, and experiencing theatre and dance together in an informal, friendly, completely unpretentious way.
Please note that the social aspect of this initiative is important: it’s not just a cheap ticket, but a way to share an in-person experience in a relaxed environment while watching great shows together.
Come for the show, stay for a chat after if you fancy. Everyone is welcome.
Can't wait to see you there!
