Estonian Pavilion, Venice Biennale
Merike Estna and Maria Arusoo
x Art Working Parents

Artist Merike Estna is working on site at the Estonian Pavilion for the duration of the Venice Biennale, creating a monumental multi-panel painting in full view of the public. Ahead of the Biennale, Estna painted a tiled interior for her Venetian ‘studio’ including a floor featuring depictions of motherhood. Her family has accompanied her to Venice, and the pavilion’s curators have also been working with babies and/ or children in tow. It shouldn’t be radical to make care and family this visible in an international art context and yet it is.
Join us for a conversation with Estna and Maria Arusoo – director of the Center for Contemporary Arts Estonia and commissioner of the Estonian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale – who will share images of the work as it has progressed during the first months of the Biennale, and discuss the logistics of staging a durational work while also accommodating the demands of family life.
