Blanket of Ashes - An Antique Collective Theatre Show
Blanket of Ashes follows a chorus of grieving Argive mothers who have lost their sons in the war led by their king Adrastus, between their city of Argos and Creon’s city of Thebes. They have come to Theseus, the general of Athens, to ask him to help retrieve their son’s bodies from Thebes so that they may bury them and end the cycle of violence. They perform a suppliant ritual to plead for refuge and aid, appealing to Theseus’ empathy and humanity. Theseus’ mother Aethra encourages him to “Think not on the boarders that divide us”, but to see the women as people.
This piece is an adaptation of Suppliant Women by Euripides and is the first known staging of it in the UK!
In an era of rising nationalism, this 2,500 year old play asks all the important questions about human rights, responsibility, and the rules we live by.
