Writing Funny Fiction workshop with Kate Davies
What makes queer fiction funny? How can humour help us tell stories about identity, community, desire, belonging, and the glorious absurdities of everyday life?
Learn how to write fiction that makes people laugh in this workshop with Kate Davies, whose first novel, In at the Deep End, was shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction. We'll look at the purpose humour can have in storytelling: from joy, satire and camp; to awkwardness, resilience and resistance. Together we'll look at the technical aspects of writing jokes, examine extracts from comic novels to analyse how different writers use comedy in their work, and have a go at developing comic prose.
Whether you're writing queer characters, queer stories, or simply interested in bringing more humour into your fiction, this workshop offers practical tools, creative inspiration, and plenty of laughs.
This workshop is open to writers of all abilities who identify as LGBTQIA+.
