GENDER PUNKS - London Launch
In Gender Punks, Kuku Schrapnell brings to life the stories of trans and intersex individuals from the 17th to the 20th century. The book confronts fundamental questions: What is gender, anyway? And how do we make this world a better place?
With wit and insight, Kuku Schrapnell traces the lives of queer icons such as Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengel, Romaine-la-Prophétesse, Lucy Hicks Anderson, and Danshō Okiyo.
Set against the backdrop of patriarchy and capitalism, it reveals acts of resistance that ripple through history—first personal, then collective. Kuku Schrapnell unearths these lives from court and medical records and retells them with care, solidarity and compassion.
KUKU SCHRAPNELL, born and raised in Western Germany, studied social sciences, philosophy and education in the former GDR. Kuku works as a speaker and leads workshops in Berlin and beyond. Kuku’s work focuses on queer history, trans and gender politics, and is, quite unjustly, not yet regarded as the Rosamunde Pilcher of queer feminism.
