Queering the Voice
a creative workshop - drawing, writing, sounding
with multi-disciplinary artist Guy Harries (co-founder of Queer Spaces)
in collaboration with: Westminster LGBT+ Forum, Queer Spaces, Tenderbooks and the University of East London

The voice on the page, the voice out loud, the voice as others hear it. Queering the Voice is a two-hour workshop at Tenderbooks that moves through all three, starting with a poem and ending in sound. Led by composer and multi-disciplinary artist Guy Harries.
The session is in two parts. We will begin with drawing and visual inspirations, including a selection of books curated specially for the event by Tenderbooks, used to challenge our usual ways of seeing and to open a way into writing. From there we will shape what emerges into a short poem. In the second part we will turn to the voice, with exercises to warm it up, connect it and put it to use in a safe and supported way. There is the option to share your poem with the group if you choose.
Running through all of it is queering as a method: a way of looking at the world, questioning what gets taken for granted and finding new ways of experiencing. Queerness is something all of us can work with, and the workshop is open to everyone, LGBTQ+ people and allies alike.
The workshop is open to all levels and backgrounds, and is especially suited to anyone curious about voice, writing and new ways of making. You will leave with a poem of your own, a freer voice and a sharper sense of the questions worth asking.
