Medially Present: Listening to Past Voices from the Archives
Cường Minh Bá Phạm will lead a listening workshop with materials from the Lautarchiv. This archive is based in Berlin and its catalogue primarily consists of sound materials collected from prisoners of war (POWs) interned in Germany during WWI. This workshop explores methods of engaging with sonic materials collected against the backdrop of German colonial expansion, in order to develop a theoretical tool for engaging with the archives. The recordings that will be played are in Vietnamese, Khmer, and Hakka. Participants should be POCs who are interested in decolonial methods of archiving and listening.
The workshop is limited to 10 participants (please note sign up is a must) and will run from 10am–noon, with a 1-hour lunch break, then continuing from 1pm–2pm. Participants are welcome to join Centre 151's luncheon club out of their own pocket; note they generally do not cater to vegetarians and vegans.
Please note that the materials presented were collected under coercive circumstances, and therefore discussion in the workshop will involve topics that may be sensitive.
