Join us on the 17th of August for a screening of ‘The Colony', fundraising for Anaka Women's Collective.
Filmed in Birmingham, it gives voice to working-class immigrants from the Carribean. The film uses no narration or commentary, allowing its participants - including a railwayman from St Kitts, a bus conductor from Jamaica, a family of singers from Trinidad and a nurse from Barbados - to speak intelligently and articulately about their experiences of Britain.
We will be raising money for Anaka Women's Collective (@anakacollective), a Belfast based mutual aid group run by and for women from ethnic minorities. In the wake of the racist anti-immigrant pogroms last month, they provided invaluable aid to people displaced and under threat in their own homes, and continue to provide the support the State has failed to give.
All proceeds from ticket sales and the stalls will go directly to this group. We will also be joined by Southwark and Lambeth Anti-Raids (@slantiraids), and we invite everyone to stay after the screening as we will be holding an open discussion around how to combat racist violence from fascists (in goverment or otherwise) until 9:45.
We will be offering free food!
