Public Meeting: "Women, Rent Strikes and Cable Street"
In the 1930s, then as now, the fight for better housing went hand-in-hand with the fight against the far right. The East End saw some of the biggest campaigns against slum landlords and evictions, including rent strikes involving some of the same people who were on Cable Street on 4th October 1936.
Again like today, women were often at the forefront of housing struggles. This meeting will explore this history, including the Bangladeshi squatting movement of the 1970s, with local activists who reject the scapegoating of immigrants for the housing misery of working class communities.
