TECHSTILES: Encrypted Embroidery
Goals of the WorkshopLearn about the importance of data storage and encryption through the medium of cross stitch embroidery. Practice meditative making and informed data decisions. This is a beginner workshop.
IntroductionExplanation of the value of data and how people would embroider their clothes to communicate various parts of their identity. Introduction to encryption and knitting used to pass secret messages in WW2. Brief look at punk/ DIY culture and patch creation.
The ActivityParticipants are introduced to the code designed for cross stitch fabric. There is a supplementary script written in p5.js they can use to turn their message into the correct coded design. I will provide some simple cross stitch patterns they can trace their message onto and point them in the direction of online directories of patterns for choice. The majority of the workshop will be spent cross stitching their patterns with the aim of making a small patch. It’s recommended for the time frame to do a name or short phrase.
