About this session
What does being a man mean to us and how much of that comes from our own sense of self, our culture, family, or society?
As GBTQ South Asian men, we may have grown up with expectations about masculinity, being a “good son”, relationships, family expectations and how men are expected to behave. Our sexuality or gender identity & expression, may also have been challenged, changed or reshaped some of those expectations.
In this South Asian HangOut session, we’ll explore masculinity, culture and queerness, and what it means to define ourselves beyond the roles and expectations placed on us.
- What messages did we grow up with about being a man?
- How has being GBTQ influenced our relationship with masculinity?
- What does being a South Asian GBTQ man on our own terms look like?
About South Asian HangOuts
A twice monthly friendly and welcoming online social and peer support group for gay, bi and trans men with South Asian heritage.
Our aim is to reduce isolation by creating a safe space to get to know each other through shared lived experiences, topic discussions and creative activities.
This online space is an opportunity to build community by coming together and connecting with one another in a safe and friendly non-judgmental space.
- We meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month 6 -7.30pm
- Please try to arrive 5 minutes early. The Zoom room closes at 6.10pm (this is so we can minimise any disruption).

By South Asian we mean countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and beyond. We welcome gay, bi & trans men from all South Asian faith backgrounds as well as those who don’t identify with any faith. One of the main aims of the groups is to reduce isolation including social, cultural and geographical, by connecting with each other's lived experiences.
