AIDS Broadcasting and Gay Campaigning in the Eighties: A Witness Seminar
The HIV/AIDS crisis transformed the relationship between gay men, pressure groups, broadcasters and the government in 1980s Britain. This witness seminar will hear from four men who shaped and observed this transformation - Keith Howes (formerly of Gay News), Julian Meldrum (formerly of Capital Gay and Hall-Carpenter Archives), Martin Weaver and Tony Whitehead (both formerly of Terrence Higgins Trust) - and invites audience members to share their experiences of the 1980s and reflect upon subsequent media coverage of LGBTQ+ issues.
The seminar is chaired by Professor Virginia Berridge, author of AIDS in the UK: The Making of Policy, 1981-1994, and is organised by Professor Marcus Collins as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council project Re-viewing LGBTQ+ Lives through Broadcasting in Twentieth-century Britain. It is accompanied by a pop-up exhibition showcasing interviews collected by the National HIV Story Trust.
The witness seminar is free and open to all. It will take place from 6-8 on Tuesday 29 September, Room 2.05, Loughborough University London, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E20 3BS (directions here). Please email marcus.collins@lboro.ac.uk with any queries.
