Battle of Cable Street 90 Years: Chicken Soup & Barley Play Reading (Arnold Wesker, 1956)
90 years ago on the 4th October 1936 the people of London defeated the police and Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists at Cable Street as they attempted to march through the East End. At the time this was a mostly Jewish area and fascists were targeting Jews and Communists. Chicken Soup with Barley is about a Jewish Communist family living in the East End of London, following their participation in the battle of Cable street and the personal and political struggles and triumphs they experience as the 20th century wears on.Join Feminist Fightback to participate in reading the play aloud together followed by a discussion, starting at 7pm at Portsoken Community Centre, Aldgate (not quite cable street but close!). Copies of the play will be provided on the day.
