Gender is one of the most contested topics of our age, as ideologies are weaponised by the far right and real trans lives are targeted. But what are we talking about when we talk about gender? What are the origins of the concept itself, and where might it take us in the future?Rooted in decades of deep research and first-hand experience, Susan Stryker's sharp-eyed analysis invites us into her lifelong quest to uncover what gender means and does. From nineteenth-century phrenology to present-day anti-trans conspiracies to examples from her lifetime as an agenda setting historian, filmmaker and activist, Stryker finds surprising places to tune into the origins, idiosyncrasies and generative possibilities of the gender concept.
Susan Stryker is a historical researcher, theoretical writer and activist. Her academic field-building activities have helped shape the conversation on trans issues since the early 1990s.
Nat Raha is a poet, and lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. She contributed to the collection Transgender Marxism. She has authored four books of poetry, numerous journal articles, and her writing has been translated into eight languages.

๐ A note on the bookshop space and expectations. The bookshop space is small, so events like this tend to be magical, intimate, low key and occasionally chaotic. Seating is a mix of some chairs with backs, as well as benches, stools and floor cushions. Lighting is soft and low. The big doors can open for ventilation - and we always do a check before we start to make sure everyone is comfortable, and to make sure everyone who needs a seat has one. Get in touch if you need a space reserved.
Please note: There is (still) no bathroom at the bookshop. The closest accessible toilets are Glad Cafe and Tramway.
