An outdoor installation consisting of a series of murals by Jasmine Kahlia!
This Black History Month, you’ll find a series of murals throughout Canary Wharf designed by interdisciplinary artist, Jasmine Kahlia from Bluprinta.
Presented across four mural sites, Jasmine was driven by a deep passion to make pieces that are positive, affirming and joyful.
Folkloriq – North Colonnade E14 5AB
Folkloriq draws on Jamaican, Caribbean and Central American folkloric and contemporary styles and colours that Jasmine was used to seeing in books like Anansi which would have bright, saturated colours juxtaposed with clear black lines. However, the colours and gradients used here are more modern, plasticky and almost neon. Jasmine uses synthetic colours as opposed to the natural bright colours come across in the Caribbean, to illustrate that the city is our habitat, however the complexities and traditions of the diaspora remain.
Facin our Dreamz – Upper Bank Street E14 5EW
For the second piece, Jasmine spoke to different professionals about their journeys, accomplishments and accolades.
She spoke to professionals across many industries, life sciences, AI, property management, sports, finance, fashion, coaching and many more, and wanted to platform their stories and proudly present their portraits on Upper Bank Street, at the centre of the Wharf.
Blaq Excellence – Montgomery Square E14 5GX
This piece is about freedom, liberation and intrinsic creative flow. An interrogation of fluid movement and belonging. This piece draws on many diasporic colours and shades.
Jasmine has deliberately included this particular shade of blue, which is quite babylike and fresh in contrast with the abundance of carefully selected browns: Honey, Mahogany, Ginger, Cedar to Tawny, she wanted to really bring through all the skin tones in this piece and create space for recognition, familiarity and pride.
Heartest Truth – George Street E14 9QG
As an interdisciplinary artist, Jasmine wanted to convey the small moments that make a life. Through four scenes: Downfall, Triumph, Connection and Freedom. She chose colours that convey the heart space and wanted to intuitively lead with natural colours from landscapes, seascapes and skies.
This plays on a juxtaposition between masculine and feminine spaces, shapes and movement that the body inhibits and incorporates a mixture of daytime and evening colours, gradients and accents. But at the core of the piece is humanity, nature, and self-discovery. At the core of it, we are not just a colour, any colour but we are all human.
