What rights don't LGBTQIA+ people have? In conversation with Equality Network & Scottish Trans
It's a refrain frequently heard - you've won equal marriage, what rights don't you have? This, however, misunderstands the interrelated, interdependent and indivisible nature of human rights. While a range of formal discriminations against LGBTQIA+ people have been removed, our community still faces barriers to realising our rights, especially economic, cultural, and social rights, on an equal basis. Recent developments, such as the UK Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex in the Equality Act 2010, have eroded rights victories of the past quarter century, while failures to act to protect LGBTQIA+ people by banning conversion practices pose threats.
Come join us to learn about situating LGBTQIA+ issues within an international human rights framework despite the lack of a formal treaty, how Equality Network and Scottish Trans use human rights in our work, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQIA+ equality.
