As part of ‘The Places We Become’ exhibition, there will be a number of workshops being held by artists local to Manchester with each workshop providing mutual aid. I hope you can join us!
Zine-making workshop:
Following the reports of communities of Longsight and Levenshulme facing fascist threats where we will be standing in solidarity with the communities, we invite participants to reflect on their own experiences of migration, displacement, identity, and belonging, using zines to share stories and imagine alternative ways of being together.
This will be facilitated by Myth, a migrant-led collective. As queer migrants, we interrogate how we are integrated in the places we become, live within or at odds with. We believe in the importance of coming together against fascism and creating spaces of care, resistance, and collective imagination.
All proceeds from tickets for this workshop will go towards the GM Migrant Destitution Fund (MDF) MDF continues to support migrants experiencing destitution and financial hardship.
Portable altar making workshop:
Redacted, who will be joined by Cheng, are both artists who will guide you through the process of making your own portable tin altar. We invite you to bring along small personal objects, photographs, fragments, or found materials that hold meaning for you and can fit inside a small tin. Together, we will explore how these fragments can be brought together to create a personal collection of memories and connections, remembering those who came before us.
All proceeds from tickets for this workshop will go towards Empower Her,organised by Hope G.C.L.M. Foundation. With this they equip elderly widows, teen mothers, orphaned youths and displaced women with vocational skills and startup support in Congo amidst the ongoing conflict.
Sketchbook stitching workshop:
Inspired by a recent trip to Skopje, where the Orion Collective held a session on making sketchbooks, participants will learn how to transform simple materials into a handmade book. Participants are encouraged to bring postcards, photographs, or printed images to incorporate into the covers and personalise their handmade books.
You will leave having learnt a new creative skill and with your own handmade book to take home, ready to be filled with personal reflections, images, and stories inspired by the places that matter to you.
All proceeds from tickets for this workshop will go directly to the Orion Collective to support their work in Skopje making art accessible for the local community.
Whilst this is for fundraising, if anyone would like to attend but money is a barrier, please reach out to @dapicnik on instagram. No one will be turned away.
