We believe that it is essential to learn from land justice movements through the past and present to move intentionally towards the future. As part of 'Memories with the land', we'll be exploring MayDay Rooms' Eco-Action Collective to reflect on questions around strategy and organising methods and how we can apply this to LION's own land project, as well as the wider land justice movement across Britain.
This is a space to learn, plan and discuss together - no prior knowledge or experience is needed aside from a commitment to LION's values and vision. This event is for BPOC only.
Timings: 6pm - 8:30pm
Context on the Eco-Action Collection
The scope of the collection so far runs from early Earth First! through to the iterations of that movement, predominantly iterations in the British context, from Do or Die! Magazine, Greenline, and then a host of independent pamphlets, zines, flyers and other ephemera, particularly from anti-road protests (M11, Newbury bypass, Fairmile, Twyford Down). As this movement faced heavier and heavier repression through the The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (the 1994 iteration) ecological action joined more explicitly with animal liberation, squatting movements, Reclaim the Streets and anti-globalisation movements, summit hopping (like g8 etc) and then broader international solidarity campaigns, in particular responding to calls for solidarity from the EZLN/ zapatista movements.
Land In Our Names is a grassroots collective of Black and People of Colour getting land through reparations. Our collective is based in London, Britain, and works to reconnect Black and People of Colour to land, both in the city and in the countryside. Our work addresses the inequalities in access to land and food, and reimagines land stewardship towards climate and racial justice. We are organising toward collective ownership and land stewardship by Black and People of Colour, to heal the colonial-rooted trauma that has separated us and continues to extract from the land.
MayDay Rooms is an archive, resource space and safe haven for social movements, experimental and marginal cultures and their histories. Our building in the centre of London contains an archive of historical material linked to social struggles, resistance campaigns, experimental culture, and the expression of marginalised and oppressed groups.
