Soho is a space that has long been synonymous with LGBTQ+ identity. In the years before decriminalisation it was the home of queer safe spaces that operated in a spirit of resilience, power and love. These spaces co-existed and intersected with Soho's migrant communities.
In this lecture, Dan de la Motte (Queer Tours of London) shines a light on some of the most notable examples of queer spaces, and the people that populated them, during a time in the 20th century when their very identity was a crime, and Chardine Taylor Stone will speak about their project reconstructing the illicit 1920s Shim Sham Club. Chaired by Professor Ben Campkin (UCL Urban Laboratory).
