Tavistock Heritage Trust and Tavistock Guildhall are pleased to present another in their series of online talks
The 7th Earl of Elgin is best remembered for bringing back to Britain the Parthenon marbles, known in Britain as ‘the Elgin Marbles’.
But these are not the only stones he brought back. Offcuts from some of his acquisitions have travelled as far as Devon to be used in the chancel pavement of Buckfast Abbey.
This lecture looks at the widespread reuse of Roman stonework in medieval and modern times, focussing in particular on the origins of the purple porphyry used in the Buckfast pavement and the role in this played by the 7th Earl, his wife and his successors.
The lecture ranges from the Eastern desert of Egypt, to Ephesus, to Constantinople, to Westminster Abbey and Cathedral, and so to Devon.
This event is to raise funds for Tavistock Heritage Trust
