Queer Craft: learn to sew – the basics
As an extension of our Queer Craft socials held at Make Town in Hackney, we are going to start craft classes for LGBTQ+ friends, with intro to sewing being the first in store! This is Make Town’s classic beginners sewing class, taught by someone queer for participants who identify under the broad queer and trans umbrellas. We will be making a small drawstring bag - great for keeping your craft bits in!
Who the heck is the tutor?!
Thatll be me. Im becky (they/she) and i work in costume for theatre and part time at Make Town as a studio assistant and teacher type thing. My teaching style is hopefully smiley, friendly and patient - and sometimes i get the sillies!
I identify as genderqueer and pansexual and can understand why craft spaces may have social barriers and not always feel completely welcoming to people that are not cis het. Not only that, sewing can be costly and is a hobby that takes up space - which is especially tricky in london! But sewing can help us alter our clothes to our unique style/gender and creative expression - and i want to share that with people who may feel that is inaccessible to them otherwise. So if you want to keep having access to sewing machines after the class, please join us at queer craft social! The meet up is £5 for two hours, and we are now meeting twice a month. Please just let us know you want machine access ahead of the day so we can set up a machine for you!
What will you learn?
In this workshop you will learn the basics of machine etiquette. You will also learn:
What should you bring?
We will provide a selection of suitable fabrics for you to chose from and the haberdashery needed. Just bring yourself and maybe a snack!
