Join two of Scotland’s kings of comedy writing in this playful and interactive 3-part zoom workshop series designed to get you creating your own material and culminating in an online ‘scratch performance’ in front of a live audience.
In Writing Original Material 101 with drag king Phil Herrin featuring Wee Jambo, you will create, develop and perform your own material using tried and tested techniques for:
- Generating ideas and flexing your creative muscles
- Doing stand-up comedy and holding audience attention
- Writing parody songs and putting your unique spin on the classics
This is an interactive workshop series in which you can expect to receive constructive feedback in a supportive group setting. There will be demonstrations, discussions and DIY activities - full participation is highly encouraged but not mandatory. Between workshop sessions, it is expected that you would work on the material that you are developing to share in the following session.

More about Phill Herrin
Phil Herrin is Edinburgh’s longest running drag king, the OG from Leith! He’s been gein it yaldi on Scotland's stages, performing and writing his own material for 9 years. The product of lad culture, subculture and spending too much time with his best pal Begbie - Phil is the original cheeky chappy and 'yer all round top banana'. He's well known for his slick raps, dad dancing and comedy songs, including favourites such as 'Choose Leith', 'We didn’t vote for Boris' and 'The 12 days of Philmas'.
More about Wee Jambo
Drag king Wee Jambo is the fever dream creation of comedian and burlesque performer Freya Benteaux (yes, like the pie). Wee Jambo bares his soul through his comically terrible poetry, stand up routines and interpretative dance set to banging techno choons. He is proof that drag kings don't always have to be glamorous, and he is an advocate for working class performers getting their stage time, one sh*tty rap verse at a time. He has performed at drag nights, cabarets and stand up comedy clubs around Scotland, but his home and heart will always be in Glasgow.
