Nijjor Manush is excited to announce our Victory Day Mela. A family fun-filled day with live music, workshops, henna, food and more. Secure your spot at any of our free workshops here!
The two workshops taking place on the day are:
1 - A mixed media ‘Alpona’ workshop with Limma Ali from 12:30-1:30.
Alpona is a traditional Bengali art form, originating from the Sanskrit word Alimpana meaning ‘to plaster’ or ‘to coat with,’ and has been practiced for over a thousand years. Initially used by Hindu women in religious rituals, Alpona has evolved into a secular cultural expression in modern Bangladesh.
2 - A Nakshi kantha workshop with Shama Kun (Culturally Yours) from 1:30-2:30
Nakshi Kantha is an ancient heritage technique and craft which originates in Bengal. These particular designs and patterns are rendered through a type of running stitch used to decorate hand quilted Kantha (blankets). Under the tutelage of designer and crafts practitioner Shama Kun, you will learn about the cultural legacies and radical history of Nakshi Kantha, rooted in the experiences of rural Bangladeshi women, nature, storytelling, and women’s empowerment.
We are using this event to fundraise for European Legal Support Centre @elsclegal - an organisation that defends and empowers advocates for Palestinian rights across mainland Europe and Britain through legal means. Please make a contribution on the day if you feel able to!
