Terry Higgins Memorial Quilt Talk
Join us in celebrating the life of Terry Higgins with a special discussion between Sir Nick Patridge, one of the first full-time members of staff and eventual Chief Executive from 1991 to 2013, and Richard Angell OBE, the current Chief Executive - exploring the history and impact of the Terrence Higgins Trust.
Terry Higgins was the first named person in the UK to die from an AIDS-related illness in 1982. Thanks to the efforts of his friends and loved ones, his legacy lives on through the founding of Terrence Higgins Trust, a charity whose mission is to end new cases of HIV, support people living with HIV and tackle HIV related stigma.
To mark the 40th anniversary of Terry’s passing, the Trust partnered with the Quilters' Guild to create a commemorative quilt honouring his life. This powerful tribute will be on display for the first time in person at Queer Britain from the 11th - 15th June.
This event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on and learn about Terry’s story and the enduring impact of the movement his memory helped inspire.
Richard Angell OBE
Richard became Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust in March 2023, having worked for the charity since 2020.
During his time at Terrence Higgins Trust, Richard has played an integral role in securing £27 million Government funding for opt-out HIV testing in emergency departments and its further extension to 96 hospitals across England and Scotland. He led on the work to successfully overturn discriminatory exclusions in blood donation for gay and bisexual men, and those primarily from the UK’s Black communities, and drove successful work to lift the bans on people living with HIV serving in the military and flying as commercial pilots, and on ‘driving with AIDS’.
Richard was central to securing the new government’s commitment to end new HIV cases by 2030 and worked on making Sir Keir Starmer the first UK Prime Minister to publicly take an HIV test.
He commissioned the Terry Higgins AIDS Memorial Quilt to mark the 40th anniversary of the charity.
Nick Partridge
Nick has worked for the Terrence Higgins Trust since 1985 and was appointed its Chief Executive in 1991. Over the past twenty years he has campaigned on a variety of AIDS and sexual health issues. In 2004, Partridge was appointed a Commissioner of the Healthcare Commission, the independent inspectorate responsible for reviewing the quality of healthcare in England. He is also Deputy Chair of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration.
