What is it?!
Every great script, show, book, starts with a strong story. In this 2-part fun and practical course, you’ll learn how to shape your ideas into compelling stories. We'll start at the beginning and work our way through character, worlds, and narrative until you have your all-important Treatment. Bring your ideas and even your existing stories to stress test them in this hands-on session!
Places are limited.
The Details
This course will take place over 2 evenings:
7pm - 8.15pm on Tuesday 7 October
7pm-8.15pm on Tuesday 14 October
Sessions will take place ONLINE - but don't worry, we've learned from every online course we've been made to sit through, so this one will be fun, practical, have breaks, and neck stretching moments throughout! Please reach out if you have additional accessibility needs. A link to join the session will be sent before each session begins.
Who is it for??
Anyone who has been even remotely interested in creating Story - whatever the form. We're not thinking about the medium in this course, we're bringing your mind back to the core of what makes a good script/book/show/act. If you're into storytelling and want to learn/relearn/remind/reinspire, join us (whatever your expertise level).
We are also running a 2-part Scripting course later in the month; be writing ready in time for Halloween!
What will each session cover?
7 October we will cover:
- Building your controlling idea: Where you start a story that will end up as a tight, impactful Story
- Character: How to build 4D characters, their relationships and their purpose
- World Development: How to build a world for your characters and story to thrive (or be tortured; it's your story!)
14 October we will cover:
- Narrative: What makes a compelling story and how does that break down?
- The Treatment: Creating a useful Treatment to guide creativity and sell your story
- Next Steps: Where do we go from here?
All with practical exercises and resources!
What will I walk away from this session with?
Firstly, you'll automatically get a Treatment Template, and a whole host of other resources.
OFitD Productions are making these courses exactly how we wish courses were when we needed to learn this stuff; we want them to give you practical, actionable guidance and leave you feeling like you've made progress (rather than just having a massively longer to-do list!).
Who is running the course and giving me all of this advice?
Jemma Rowlston has been writing scripts professionally for the last 14 years and - the daughter of a writer - has been educated in story since her birth. She's consulted on and edited countless scripts, runs regular one to one development sessions with aspiring writers and was once turned away from a degree in writing because she'd already read the extended reading list (she thanks that professor for not just taking her money!). She has written for TV in South Africa, consulted on scripts on Netflix, written sell out theatre shows, and will one day publish the book she wrote. She knows story - or her father would disown her.
Why is it so cheap?!
We know, usual retail price for this kind of course is £100 and beyond…!
This is the first time we are running this course in this capacity (though the billionth time we've shared the guidance found in the course). So we'll be asking for anyone who wants to, to give us a little testimonial and some feedback so we can make this the best course possible. We're also launching the education wing of our production company, so it's a little celebratory gift from us to you.
If you are in financial struggle and wish to join this course, please reach out to us at ofitdarts@gmail.com and we can see what we can do. We got you.
