MCR student meeting: how would communists engage with the new party?
An event for students, organised by Greater Manchester rs21 Students!
This summer saw the announcement of a New Left Party co-founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana. Since then, the party has amassed over 800,000 sign-ups to its mailing list. Clearly, many people are eager for a genuine socialist politics to contest the rise of Reform UK and the disappointments of Starmer’s Labour.
Little is currently known about the party and the forces responsible for founding it, but in the upcoming months we can expect to see a founding conference which will decide the party’s name, organizational structure, broad principles and more.
All of this has sparked significant debate across the revolutionary left. On what basis should we engage with a party that will, at least at the beginning, tend heavily towards reformism? What kinds of structures and principles should we fight for? Or should we even bother to engage at all?
Join us on 01.10.25 to listen to two very different perspectives on these questions. We’re not here to feed you straightforward answers but to facilitate a lively debate open to anyone who considers themself a socialist.
