✊In the run up to the National Day of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention on the 18th of October, Rainbow Migration and Beyond Detention are collaborating for a short film screening and talk about immigration detention in the UK, explaining why it's harmful to everyone and especially to women and LGBTQI+ people.
✍This will be followed by a chance to make placards for people who are attending demos outside detention centres on the 18th, or to write letters of solidarity to people in detention for those who can't make the demos. The letters will be translated and distributed to people in detention centres after the event.
Over 20,000 people were detained last year. The UK is the only country in Europe to have indefinite immigration detention, meaning people are locked up without courts or judges, in prison-like conditions, for an unlimited amount of time - simply because their right to live in the UK is being questioned. Detention is a cruel and senseless way to treat people, and only benefits the private contractors paid millions of pounds every year to run the UK's detention centres.
Whether you are a seasoned campaigner or are hearing about immigration detention for the first time, come along to learn more about why detention is so harmful and what you can do about it.
