This October, we are inviting you to our annual fungi walks in Epping forest with Epping Forest Heritage Trust, as art of the 'Epping Forest Heritage for All' programme.
By this invitation, we hope you can join us to step into the forest, collectively reflect on our relationship with nature, and further develop possibilities of new narratives on heritage, death & dying & grief. Through mediums including weaving, writing and drawing, we hope to hold space for exploration on how to build and nurture relationships, care and support with an embodied and rooted experience in nature and fungi.
Both events will be conducted in Chinese.
Event 1: Cycle of Life and Changing Seasons
Date & Time: 26th October, 12:30 – 16:00
Meeting at: Loughton underground station
About the event:
For 53 Death Cafe’s October event, we are inviting everyone on a walk through the enchanted Epping Forest. Through a guided fungi walk, we’ll be spending some time with forest, in particular its fungi network, reflecting on what death and cycle of life mean for the natural world and how nature can inform and support us in rebuilding the relationship between the individual, the collective, the environment we’re in, the land & nature that nurtures us, and the experience of life and death.
We will be providing everyone with pen and paper, as well as prompts, for you to write, doodle or draw during our walk. We hope to nurture an expansive and multi-medium exploration of our relationship with death and grief:
How does the land we inhabit, and the land that nurtured us and our ancestors, offer us support and care when we make sense of death and the uncertainty it brings?
With the abundance of metaphors nature provides, what can we do, as individuals and members of communities, to care for each other in times of crises and grief?
Gifted by the multitude of wisdom and metaphors from the forest, what can we build to develop new heritage narratives where both humans and nature can thrive?
Event 2: Heritage Walk and Weaving
Date & Time: 29th October, 10:20 – 15:20 (Please bring your lunch with you!)
Meeting at: Loughton underground station
About the event:
On the day of the Double Ninth Festival, we will gather in Epping Forest for a one-day event that combines a fungi walk with a weaving workshop. The session invites participants to reflect on the relationship between humans and the forest, to share our own heritage, and to collectively develop new heritage narratives - about adaptation, connection, and the creation of new possibilities.
During the weaving session, we will bring our observations and impressions from the fungi walk, using looms to weave fibre structures inspired by mycelial networks. Related books and zines will also be available for reading and discussion.
